Despite initial estimates, The Hunger Games movie earned just under $20 million in its midnight opening in the U.S.
Box Office Mojo currently estimates that midnight screenings of The Hunger Games brought in $19.7 million, roughly under earlier estimates that pegged the earnings at $25 million or higher. The film played in over 4,100 theaters nationwide.
Though smaller than originally estimated, that’s still a serious haul for just one night’s earnings. This weekend, The Hunger Games is expected to earn $100 million or more at the box office.
The Hunger Games movie’s $19.7 million for opening night is slightly higher than the pre-release intake for The Dark Knight in 2008, which earned $18.5 million. However, it is significantly smaller than last year’s record-setting $42.5 million earned by Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. From the Twilight franchise, the first film, as well as Eclipse and Breaking Dawn: Part 1 all earned around $30 million in their midnight releases.
